The 50th Green House Opens

Green Houses, a Nursing Home Alternative Profiled by the Wall Street Journal, Continues to Grow in Popularity
“The Green House model embodies profound culture change in nursing homes and long-term care, redefining how we support and respect elders and the people who care for them,” said Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., RWJF president and CEO, in a new video detailing the impact the Green House model has had on elders and the long-term care workers who care for this population.

NCB Capital Impact of Oakland, Calif., led by Robert Jenkins, has received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Vulnerable Populations Portfolio to replicate the Green House model on a national scale with the goal of developing 50 such homes by 2010. The success of this model and the autonomy it provides its residents is so powerful that on December 5, 2008, the 50th Green House opened in the United States, one year earlier than anticipated. This milestone Green House opened its doors in Troy, N.Y. Plans for the Eddy Campus consist of 16 homes, five of which are currently under construction.
